______ THE SYMPOSIUM ______

TALK :: MAKE :: TALK :: MAKE :: TALK :: MAKE

12 months of big dreaming. 100 creative minds. 5 magical, hazy days of music and learning. Our heads are still spinning. The 2009 Symposium was, by far, the most succesful and inspirational ever.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU to the partners, supporters, speakers, animators, and mostly to those of you who came and drew something meaningful from the event.

The Symposium is a noisier-than-ever-before music conference dedicated to our proud community; it is designed for those who work to make a life in music, and for those who love music. It is designed for you.

Our main goal is to make programming as open, inclusive and accessible as possible. Brilliant set designer Veronica Classen (Chicago, Montréal) is installing a backdrop built just for us again this year, making the space warm and inspirational to even the most hungover among you. "Face-to-Face"* sessions happen each day, offering speakers, animators, and all attendees the chance to meet and share ideas in a casual setting, over snacks and drinks.

with Headlining Speakers:

Roxanne Shante in conversation with Roxanne Arsenault, aka Donzelle

FAUST, in a BYOInstruments Workshop

Introducing DJed Lectures! Not sure what that a DJed lecture is? It is a live musical paper that combines speaking with direct audio sampling. This special invite-only roster of ethno-musicologists/DJs will present on the subject of street music, a label often interchangeable with electronic music. What are the ways that society and the dominant open-source culture and technologies impact  creative process and emerging genres? Come learn while celebrating and promoting the artists, sounds, and songs behind some of the most innovative and thriving musical movements today. 5 DJs. It'll be like the best article you've never read on global street music. With DJ /rupture, Khiasma & more on everything from ''musical memes" to carioca funk.

Last year we brought Philidelphia artist Max Lawrence to create a wall-sized, lion-shaped body contact synthesizer.  This year, he'll using his unique mixture of ghetto technology and folk engineering to bring Kimberlite and the Pipes* to life. This is an interactive animatronics (as in animals!) dueling synth straight out of his SFMOMA exhibit. The installation will be under construction for the duration of the Symposium, culminating in a demo and vernissage. Photo below shows a hint of how beautiful it will be.

*kimberlite pipes are the channels on molten lava from the center of the earth in which diamonds form.
